The mill on Skär

Cuts on northeastern Fårö were built on late.
One of the first to settle here and cultivate new land was Niklas Ekman who moved here in the 1830s. Ekman's farm is located diagonally opposite the entrance to Skärsände and Norsta Aura. In front of the yard is a wooden post mill. It was built in 1867. The pole mill is the only one of its kind on Fårö and one of the few on Gotland. The mill was restored a few years ago by the farm's current owner together with Fårö Hembygdsförening. Here you can, when the wind is suitable, grind rye in the old way.
On the farm there are several ancient buildings from the 19th century, including a threshing walk with the outer walls covered by so-called "stems", an ancient form of wall panel reminiscent of shingles. Next to the house is an old cherry garden and hundred-year-old pear trees. The dwelling house is also from the 19th century.

It was here like the legendary
"Kalle pa Skär", ie. Karl Ekman, lived. He was born in 1866 and turned 105 years old.

Fårö residents who manned the lifeboat on Skär and he was rewarded already at a young age for his achievements in the sea rescue
service. Karl Ekman was also recognized for his artistically made simple furniture and tools. His smithy and carpentry remain in the yard in the condition he left it. The smithy was built in the middle of the 19th century from wood that was probably boarding in a sailing full rig that ran aground on the dangerous Salvo reef.
